In this episode Ella Morton interviews Justin Gignac of NYC Garbage. A guy that pics up trash from the streets of NYC and the carefully puts them into different boxes. Interesting to hear about how he started out only charging 10 US dollars for a box 10 years ago and no sells them for about 50 dollars. Not only did the price go up but peoples perception of the product from a fun thing to art came along with the rising price tag. This blogpost is a reminder to myself bying one next time I go to NYC! Or as Justin himself explains it on his website “Own your own piece of New York, before they clean up this town”.

We’ve all (well at least A LOT of us) seen the movie Pretty Woman in which Richard Gere’s character rents a prostitute to be his “companion” at a few events and parties. I’ve heard about renting a personal travel guide somewhere which I think sounds like a good idea. But renting a friend? At Rentafriend.com you can do just that for 10 US dollars or more an hour. That sounds really sad to me. What do you think, would you consider renting someone that would appear as your “friend” on a party or a more business related event? So far this site only lets you find “friends” in the US or Canada but I’m sure there are other simular sites like this one in other countries, know of any?

I found some interesting numbers in this Facebook vs Twitter chart that digitalsurgeons put together. All stats are based on the US population but I still think they are interesting in a wider perspective.

Maybe not that surprisingly though, women are more social, at least on Facebook and Twitter. The number of Facebook users are far ahead with its 500 million vs 106 million Twitter users. It’s interesting to see that the people that do use Twitter seem to be a bit more active than the average Facebook user. 52% of Twitter users update their status message everyday by comparision with only 12% of all Facebook users. In both cases more than half of the users that already follow a brand on Facebook or Twitter, say they will purchase something from that specific brand. That at least show that if you manage to create a connection and actually do something of value to your followers there’s a rather big chance that you’ll get a return on your investment in time.

Even though I’m a fan and huge consumer of many social media services and tools I don’t think that this is a “free ticket to success” and I most certainly don’t think that having a Facebook page and a Twitter account is enough or even a must in every case. Sure it’s good to be where your customers are and to enable a direct communication channel with them but I am convinced that you need to actually give your customers something more than to just be where they are. That’s why I think you as a brand owner need to think about what you can do for your customers (or potential customers)? How can you help them in their everyday life? If you give you shall receive!

Number 1 – SMOKE The Convenient Truth

How anyone voluntarily inhale all that crap is beyond me.

Number 2 – YOU SUCK AT POWERPOINT!

This is something every pupil should learn in school and of course all of those out there that talk at conferences or just in an office meeting. If every presentation would look like this one I’m sure people would pay more attention!

Number 3 – Social Media For Business

By now I think the knowledge about social media should be a part of every business out there that wants to connect with their consumers (and who doesn’t?) and of course make their business grow. But this doesn’t mean that using all these kinds of social media tools will be a “quick fix” to success. By adding a value and actually helping your customers in some way (branded utilities) you can get people to really like you and your products/services. Besides embracing social media (which I think is a necessary foundation) take your communication to the next level in 2011 by adding one or more branded utilities!
