Voddler is in the house

Today the Swedish online video streaming service Voddler “The magic world of movies” is being launched. So far it doesn’t work for Mac-users :( but I’ve seen tweets about it being available for Mac users sometime during next week. If that’s true I’m a happy bee :)

According to an article in the Swedish newsmagazine DN Voddler will not only be about movies and TV-series but will also stream music in the future. This means an other Swedish well-known service, Spotify, will get some competition. Spotify is still way ahead when it comes to users and the amount of PR the service has gotten during these past few months. And I do belive in finding your nisch when it comes to the Internet, people want to go where the best content is. The fact that Voddler is aiming towards gather both movies, TV-shows and music in one place is interesting though.

I must say I’m a bit excited about this one and I have big expectations. The big question is will people be willing to pay for the service? The will use pre-roll ads in the movies but when you think about all the costs the service must have that probably won’t be enough. Like Spotify they will also have some sort of a premium version. If the service is really good and the library of movies is big enough I do think it has got a chance to survive. I think it’s important though to get the movies up there as quick as possible when released. If you could stream a movie as a premium user at the same time as it’s being released on theaters that would be something! But I suppose the movie industry hasn’t realized that DVD releases don’t have to come after the theaters, they are two different experiences. Only time will tell if the dreams over at Voddler will come true or not…

I Spezify myself

Google has been top of mind of search engines for quit some time now. Local search engines have closed their “shops” and if I say Altavista or Ask.com to the people around me they either get that nostalgic look on their face or they don’t know what I’m talking about. How do you find your information online? “I just google it”. That would probably be the answer 90% or more of the ones I would ask.

Last week when my chronicle for the Swedish edition of Metro Teknik came out I pushed the envelope by saying there aren’t many web services I haven’t heard about or already has got an account for. Sure there are but hey you need to be a bit cocky to stand out right? Anyhow because of that statement I got an email from Per Persson, one of the founders of the service, telling me about a new Swedish search engine called Spezify. Per was right, I hadn’t heard about that one which was not that strange since it launched today (at least for us non beta-users). As I was looking for some acknowledgment I decided to Spezify myself. This is what I got:

What differs Spezify from other search engines out there is how the results are being presented for you visually. You enter a keyword and the engine then searches through pictures, videos, blog entries, articles online, Twitter feeds and so on. Today the search engine find its information from MSN Live search, Yahoo, Amazon, Twitter and Ebay. According to a press release I got, that list will continue to grow.

I think it’s interesting to see other players in this field so dominated by Google today. When I typed in “lindapierre” the results were pretty ok but when I entered a space in between it was harder for the engine to find what I was looking for. In Google I always use “” to specify my search term, Spezify didn’t like that at all but sent me right back to the start page instead. I’m not so sure I will use Spezify if I’m looking for something in particular but if I’m not and want some new suggestions this might be the service for that. Earlier I have been using Stumble Upon for that “surprise feature” but how knows I might switch to Spezify instead. I am despite all a visual person and I like getting that kind of overview. With a bit more sources and the use of “” I think Spezify might have a bright future. Also I think it’s great to see Swedish startups aiming towards a international crowd! You go! :)

There has been a lot (not to under estimate) of talk lately about search engines. Here are some of them:

  • Microsoft’s Bing
  • The Google version of Bing called Bingle
  • The so called “knowledge engine” Wolfram Alpha
  • Questionable search engine that censures for Jewish fundamentalist called Koogle

There’s a lot of talk about following people, brands, products you name it. People seems to be obsessed about getting the information quick (I know I am) but also to make sure they don’t miss out on something their “friends” like. I have used Twitter for a couple of years now and it has been interesting to see the dramatic growth of the service in only the last 6 months. One thing Twitter (and similar services for that matter) is good for is when you want to follow events or happenings of any kind in real time. By watching the latest episode of one my favorite video podcast I’ve been following since 2006 CommandN, I heard about an application (and I just love those…) called almost.at.

almost.at

If you also like to see what people talk about a certain event in real time you should definitely check out this one. The fact that it has got a Mac OSX software application makes me happy because I love not having to go to a certain website. But if you prefer heading over to an online destination site that is of course possible as well. This weekend it’s the European Election. Want to know what people are talking about it? Besides actually meeting face to face you know where to go to get that information addiction of yours fed! :)
